Federal Mill House
The Federal Mill House is a 1600 sf addition-remodel located on Bend’s Westside. The original home was a four room, 700 sf house built in the 1920’s. The new home is comprised of three intersecting volumes, the traditional form of the original house, a new second story master suite, and a new garage. The new elements of the house are pushed to the back of the lot allowing the front of the house to relate to the surrounding neighborhoods form and scale, and maximizing southern yard space. Interiors are kept open and light with a large double height space around the stair that connects all the major rooms, and a 8’-6” x 6’ bedroom door that sits flush with the wall when open. Interior and exterior finishes, including cedar, hot rolled steel, extruded polycarbonate, vertical grain douglas fir, venetian plaster, and concrete counters deliver a warm, contemporary Northwest aesthetic.

The local mountains, North and South Sister, were laser cut into a piece of steel to create a distinctive glowing address marker
A perforated steel shutter protects the large west facing window in the stairwell from overheating in the summer months. The owners passion for bicycles inspired the pedal and gear driven operating mechanism.
